Our primary curriculum relates
learning to real life experiences. The curriculum centers
around the obligation of forming Catholic youth capable of
assuming their responsibilities in the religious,
academic, social, and civic communities. Language Arts,
Math, and Science are integrated and adapted to the
developmental needs and interests of young children.
CORE CURRICULUM
Language Arts
A comprehensive approach to reading is utilized
focusing on phonics for word decoding, high frequency word
recognition, and comprehension of material read. Our
reading program instructs the young reader in a wide
variety of skills: sound/letter relationships, blending,
oral reading fluency, identifying story elements,
comprehension, critical thinking, predicting and problem
solving.
Our students are introduced to the writing process and how
to begin expressing their thoughts in written form.
Writing projects throughout the teach students the
creative writing process: idea formation, first draft,
editing, final draft, publication. Students are involved
in editing their own work as well as peer editing.
Mathematics
Number concepts, computations, problem-solving,
logical thinking, basic operations are all taught with a
focus on practical application to daily life. In addition
to an emphasis on mastering basic facts (addition and
subtraction), students use critical thinking and reasoning
skills to apply their knowledge of the basic facts to more
challenging math topics.
Science
Earth and Life Science are taught through the application
of the scientific method: hypothesis, investigation,
observation, analysis and conclusion. This process is
supported by hands-on activities and experiments allowing
the student to explore the world around him/her.
Religion
Daily prayer, weekly student prepared school Mass,
instruction in the Old and New Testament, Catholic
Doctrine, and preparation for the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. Students are guided to
put their faith in action through scheduled school-wide
service projects throughout the year.
Enrichment
Art, Computer, Drama, Library, Music, Physical Education
are offered at least once per week.
