Curriculum
Our Kindergarten consists of self-contained classes with one
certified teacher and one assistant in each classroom. Our daily schedule follows the Standards set by the State of Louisiana and the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Our main emphasis during
the school year is to instill a love of God, of one another, and of learning which students can use throughout their lives. Each day, students are involved in religious, language arts, math, science,
or social studies activities. Kindergarten students also attend physical education, music, library, and computer classes each week. Students have a daily snack with juice or milk in the morning. They may bring their lunch or purchase lunch in our school cafeteria. In the afternoon, they have rest time.
Religion
Our religion program includes content that is faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church. Kindergarten students are introduced to Christian values, the lives of the saints, observance of Holy days, and seasonal holidays. Students participate in prayer services
throughout the year. Songs, prayers, and actions are activities that are used with the children to integrate catechesis, liturgy, prayer, and living their faith among their peers, family, school, and community. Each chapter includes a family page whereby faith topics are reviewed and activities are suggested for family participation. A web site (www.WeBelieveweb.com) is also accessible for additional family-based activities. Students are also instructed in the Child Catechesis Program as mandated by the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Language Arts
The language arts program includes numerous learning activities and manipulatives that helps reinforce concepts taught within our curriculum. These activities help students learn something new, practice something already taught, or help develop their own creativity. By using these activities, students are able to learn and assist one another, follow directions, manage their time, and make meaningful decisions. Students also participate in age appropriate reading and writing instruction, reading comprehension, and critical thinking skills. A combination of phonetics, sight words, and whole language techniques are used to help students read fluently, comprehend, and use reasoning skills in daily center time. |
Math
Our math program helps students apply what they are learning to real-life situations. This connection is made to include concepts such as number and number relations, measurement, geometric concepts, problem solving, addition, subtraction, and critical thinking techniques. There is continual use of math manipulatives within our math centers.
Science
Students participate in science units that encourage students to ask questions and make observations to reach conclusions. Students use their senses, compare objects, examine position and motion of objects, examine forms of energy, characteristics of humans, plants, and animals,
and observe life cycles, their environment and characteristics of the earth. Units are teacher made and involve students in “hands on” learning.
Social Studies
In our social studies program, students learn about their state, use map skills, learn about school and community workers, and weather. Rules within their home, school, and the world are examined as well as the responsibilities of government workers and themselves as citizens. Social awareness and needs of others are recognized, historical figures and events are discussed as well as recognizing the significance of the flag. Local traditions and customs are also observed. Conflict resolution skills are taught and a drug awareness unit is taught during Red Ribbon Week that is observed throughout Jefferson parish.
Departmental Subjects
Music is used to introduce a variety of songs using motor skills and movement.
Physical Education emphasizes developing large and small motor skills, fitness and fair play.
Library skills are introduced. The librarian reads stories and
shows videos to emphasize all types of literature, and
children learn to checkout books.
Computer readiness is provided in a computer lab followed by activities that reinforce concepts learned within our curriculum.
