Activities

Academic Games
Academic games is a competitive league that concentrates on sharpening a student's skills in mathematics, social studies, and analytical thinking. Throughout the year, four games alternate: On-Sets, Equations, Propaganda, and Presidents. Students in 5th thru 7th grade are eligible, and those qualifying through an achievement formula set by the National Academic Games League, are able to attend the Olympic competition for all four games. This competition is held in late April each year.

Math Counts
Math Counts is a national competition open to students in 7th grade. The team practices weekly beginning in September for the local competition held in February. 

Altar Servers
Altar servers are in 4th thru 7th grade. In addition to serving student Masses, altar servers assist at parish Masses, weddings, funerals, and more. Members of this organization take field trips paid for by their various fund raising activities.

Choir
The Choir is open to all students in 4th thru 7th grade. The Junior High Choir is open to all students in grades seven and eight. This group practices weekly and performs throughout the school year. The Choir participates in city-wide choral competitions. Students in choir may audition for the New Orleans Elementary Honor Chorus.  

Drama Club
The Drama Club is open to all students in 6th and 7th grade. Strong emphasis is placed on acting techniques and all elements of acting. There are three productions each year which encompass all elements of theatre from set design to house management. 

Cheerleading
Cheerleading is open to all girls in 5th thru 7th grade. They participate in local and regional competitions. Tryouts are held every spring. Training begins immediately after tryouts and is held year-round.

Dance Team
The Gatorettes Dance Team is open to girls in grades 5 thru 7. Girls participate in local, regional, and national competitions throughout the year.  Tryouts are in the spring, and practices begin immediately. The girls attend a 4-day overnight camp at a nearby university to prepare for their upcoming year. This year the Gatorettes have been invited to dance at Lakeside Mall to welcome Santa Clause to his workshop. The girls will also travel to Walt Disney World in Orlando to compete in the National Dance Team Competition televised on ESPN and ESPN2.

Chess Club
The SCS Chess Club is open to students in grades two thru seven. Practices are held once a week after school or during recess. The club participates in individual tournaments and the Louisiana Scholastic Chess League tournament.

Quiz Bowl
St. Catherine fields two teams, a 5th/6th combined team and a 7th grade team. Each team competes in two Knowledge Master Open Tournaments during the year. The questions are computer based and cover all disciplines of knowledge including literature, history, geography, the sciences, mathematics, and useless trivia. A small team of seventh graders annually represents St. Catherine at regional quiz bowl tournaments that are held at high schools around the city.

Yearbook
Students will take on responsibilities for planning, organizing, and creating the annual publication. They will have input into the content, theme, cover art, layout, and writing that go into the book. The club will meet to discuss ideas, check progress, and assign new jobs. Additional responsibilities include marketing and selling the yearbook during the school year and staffing the yearbook table on registration day.
